Mezzanine Floor Building Regulations

Any structural steel mezzanine floor, whether used for storage, offices, production or retail requires building regulation approval, not planning permission.

Building regulation approval is required to ensure that the means of access for escape is satisfactory and acceptable to the fire officer / fire service. Consideration has to be given to accessing and exiting the mezzanine floor within certain distances, with either protected routes of escape within the building or directly exiting externally from the building.

Once the mezzanine floor is installed adequate lighting, emergency lighting, smoke detection, possibly sprinklers depending on the size and complexity of the project may be required.
